Anyone ever setup shopping carts for an ecommerce website?

I was thinking of Zen cart, since it's free (i'm too poor to buy cart software) - is there a better (and free) one to use?, I've heard that Zen cart is pretty complex to set up.

To use cart software, can you use your own site, and just be able to paste 'add to cart' buttons into the code? Or do you have to use a specific store template-type-thing that they provide you with and you can customize?
